Zinedine Zidane Needs To Win The Champions League To Save The Season

After the setbacks in the Super Cup and Copa del Rey, Real Madrid’s poor form in La Liga has left them with almost no chance of winning the league.

Therefore, Zinedine Zidane and Real Madrid have one last chance to save the season; the Champions League.

January 2021 has been a terrible month for Real Madrid on the pitch. They came into the new year with four trophies up for grabs, but now, it seems like they will only be able to win one.

They were surprising beaten in the Spanish Super Cup semi-final 1-2 by Athletic Bilbao. Just a few days later, they were eliminated from the Copa del Rey last 32 by third tier side Alcoyano. Madrid lost 2-1 and Alcoyano scored the winner despite only having 10 men.

Before and after those cup defeats, Real Madrid have slipped up several times in La Liga which has put them in a very difficult situation. They are 10 points behind leaders Atletico Madrid who also have a game in hand. To make things worse, an out of sorts Barca going through an institutional crisis have also got ahead of them in the league while Sevilla and Villarreal are also close by.

Barring an unbelievable collpase by Atletico Madrid, Zinedine Zidane’s men have one last chance for silverware. That is one of Zidane’s favourite trophies: the Champions League. Winning the competition would not only save Madrid’s season, but could also prevent Zidane from potentially being sacked.

Zidane won the Champions League three times in a row in the 2015-16, 2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons and on the first and third occasions, they were in a similar situation. They had little chance of winning the league and were out of the Copa del Rey. Winning the Champions League saved their season twice. Barca actually went on a dreadful run in the league in 2015-16 and Real only fell one point short in the end.

However, this season is different as they do not have Cristiano Ronaldo. He was key to them winning the Champions League four times out of five between 2014 and 2018.

Despite that, Zidane and his side will try their best to win it without the Portuguese. They are seven matches away from lifting the trophy. First up, they face Atalanta over two legs in the last 16. Real Madrid are not the favourites to win the trophy, but the club have no choice, but to try and win it. It is the Champions League or nothing.
